Charles Bridge - late afternoon today

This Satur-day was the quintessential perfect Fall Day. Nicely warm, blue sky and No clouds. Truly Amazing.

Thought I would take a few pictures of the Charles Bridge. King Charles IV commissioned the bridge with The foundation stone being laid in 1357. Charles IV's favorite architect and builder, Peter Parler, oversaw the majority of the work. The bridge was the only means of crossing the river Vltava until 1841.

The bridge is 516 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side. The Old Town bridge tower is often considered to be one of the most astonishing civil gothic-style buildings in the world.

For many years the only decoration on the bridge was a simple crucifix. Later, the Catholic Church's desire for ornamentation resulted in 30 statues being erected between 1600 and 1800.
